Gifts to Keep on Hand

Over the last year I have been extremely busy with work and sometimes I let things in my personal life slip. I’ve forgotten an upcoming event or celebration more than once. I’ve spent many weekend mornings frazzled, running around trying to buy a card and a gift.

I decided to keep a few gifts on hand at home and at the office to help me out when I’m in a pinch.

Here is a list of things I keep on hand:

1) Greeting Cards

Keeping a few cards in the office has been especially helpful. When a co-worker has a major life event, I can always go to my file cabinet and find a card that fits the occasion.

2) Food Packaging

I give cupcakes, cookies, scones, and fruit bars as gifts all the time. I package my baked goods in boxes I picked up from craft or culinary stores. Presentation is everything when you give a baked gift. Having a nice box on hand allows you to present them in style. I really like the Martha Stewart food packaging.

3) Wine

One of my favorite wines is from Koehler Winery in Santa Barbara. I always have a few extra bottles of wine in stock to give as hostess or birthday gifts.

4) Gift certificates

I like Amazon.com gift cards because people can get whatever they want. I also like to give Netflix gift certificates to friends who haven’t tried this service yet. It takes only a few minutes to order and send these gifts online.

Keeping a few of these basics around has been a big time saver for me. Are there any items you keep around that you would recommend?

I’m a big fan of searching the Hand Made store on Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks for some cool unique and affordable gifts.

I’ve been pretty disappointed in Handmade Galleries, myself. I’ve gotten a couple neat things as gifts there, but I find that place exhausting to wade through trying to find the gems. In other words, there’s a lot of crap. On the other hand, as they say, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. I’m just not patient enough for that store. I’ve seen some very cool decopage cigar purses that I would love, but they’re in the $80+ range and that’s just too rich for my blood. I also know that this is something I could do myself, but I’ve never been an arts and crafts type. I do like unique stores because at least it’s not like going to different malls and finding the same stupid thing in every single one of them. I just find Handmade Galleries a little overwhelming. Sort of like a swap meet, but not quite as bad.
