American Express Gets Customer Service Right

Last Friday my sunglasses were stolen right from under my nose at the gym while I was changing in the locker room. I turned around while changing and when I went to put my stuff in the locker, I realized my sunglasses were gone.

I explained the situation to the front desk and they took my phone number in case someone turned them in. (Yeah, right) After my workout I went back to my office. I sat at my desk stunned by the incident until I had a thought, “Wait, I bought those sunglasses with my AmEx. I wonder how their Purchase Protection policy works.”

I called American Express and the representative in the Customer Service department put me right through to the Purchase Protection Department. They told me that they could reimburse the charge within 90 days of purchase if I file a claim and it was approved. I was well within the 90 days, so I filed the claim. The representative said it could take two weeks to credit my account. He gave me my claim number and his condolences before we hung up.

This is the best customer service experience I have had in years. American Express did everything right.

  1. The claim filing process was painless because a representative walked me through steps.
  2. Both of the Customer Service Representatives were polite, helpful and thorough.
  3. I checked my account today and my account has already been credited. It took less than 3 business days to credit my account.

The process was so simple, and I was completely satisfied with the service. American Express has always been my card of choice, but I consider myself a lifetime customer after this experience.

You just got me several hundred mental yards closer to getting another AmEx card (had one in the 80s, dumped it in the 90s in favor of a fee-free mileage card).

Do you use the credit flavor of AmEx or the standard one?

I use the Blue card because it allows me to carry a balance. I put all my big ticket items on the card because of the purchase protection plan.
