Today is the first day of Unitaker Roundup. This is a list of unitaskers that are very similar but do totally different things.

Exhibit A - The egg smasher, I mean slicer.

Exhibit B - The onion and garlic smasher, I mean chopper.

Exhibit C - The tomato smasher.
I really don’t think that any of these will work the way they are supposed to over time. They may work at first, but they will get dull, hard to use and eventually your food will look like Gallagher hit it with sledge hammer.
Here are the multitaskers I recommend:

These are Wusthof knives from the Ikon collection. They are sleek and easy to handle. They will last a long time with a little maintenance. They retail for about $70 to $120 each but are worth the cost.
Good knives are one thing I won’t skimp on. I recommend splurging on nice kitchen knives and a honing steel.
Here are some instructions about knife care from one of my favorite chefs, Alton Brown.

There’s no way that tomato slicer could work. Tomatos need to be cut by serrated knives. Regular edges just bruise the skin.
